WONDER GIRLS – Changing Our World
Paola Gianturco’s newest project documents fifteen girl-led nonprofit groups who are advocating for social, economic and political justice in thirteen countries in Asia and Central Asia, North and Latin America, the Middle East, Africa and Oceania. Activist girls age 10-18 are improving education, health, equality and the environment, stopping child marriage, domestic violence, trafficking and war.
Paola shared a sampling of photographs and stories from the 90 girls she interviewed. In the book, you will learn about U.S. girls lobbying senators; see Mexican girls invent mobile phone apps to solve social problems; meet Malawian girls who convinced Parliament to outlaw child marriage; eavesdrop on Ugandan girls as they advocate for girls’ rights at a UN meeting. And you will meet other girls who write blogs, petitions, poetry, create radio shows, videos, invent dances, songs and works of art to promote their causes.
Wonder Girls, Changing Our World completes Paola Gianturco’s triptych: Women Who Light the Dark (2007) described women activists; Grandmother Power, A Global Phenomenon (2012) illustrated grandmother activists; and now Wonder Girls heralds a new era of girl activists. These Wonder Girls give witness to how girl activists are transforming our world.
