The Journey Summer Camp for girls was held from July 13th through 19th on the picturesque campus of Washington College in Chestertown, MD on the Eastern Shore. Twenty-four rising 8th and 9th grade girls from Howard County were selected to attend the camp’s eighth year.
The week was full of many different program components, including a series of leadership and discussion workshops as well as projects, presentations and activities focused on celebrating inner and outer beauty. The girls were engaged in discussions and throughout the week impressed the staff with their leadership development and increased understanding of what it means to be a woman in society.
One of the most meaningful activities occurred mid-week. Delegates described how they perceived themselves and were then asked to share how they perceived each other. In the words of one participant: “There were so many tears. We realized that people look at us and see someone who is beautiful and inspirational. And none of us thought about ourselves like that.”
For Capstone, the girls had the opportunity to look at profiles of incredible women leaders in Howard County and they select five to honor at the WGC Journey Tea in August. For Community Project, they researched non-profits in Howard County and developed a fundraiser proposal for the Young Women’s Giving Circle.
Asked to describe the overall experience, one delegate put it simply: “Life-changing.”
